Partners for Prevention: Working with Boys and Men
to Prevent Gender-based Violence:
A United Nations Joint Regional Programme, Asia Pacific 2008 – 2011
Organised & Coordinated by Aakar
Background
Gender-based violence is a plague. It destroys human rights, reverses gains in development, empties public coffers and devastates families. No community is immune to gender-based violence - it affects all ages, classes, castes and social groups. It exists everywhere.
United Nations in the Asia region has been supporting a networking, consultation and programme formulation process for a regional initiative on gender-based violence prevention. As a result of this process, a joint UN regional programme is now being finalised for 2008 -11 to support violence prevention in the region and to help ensure boys and men are part of the process.
The joint programme will support a series of cultural interventions during the 16 Days of Activism. These 16 days connect two dates, 25 November and 10 December, the international day for the elimination of all forms of violence against women and the international day for human rights. Public awareness events held over the 16 Days help to raise awareness about gender violence, human rights and the connection between the two. Each year, thousands of activists from all over the world utilize the 16 Days to further their work to end violence against women. The series of events being organised in Delhi will focus on masculinities and building partnerships with boys and men for prevention programmes.
A series of cultural interventions on the theme of masculinities comprising of a Policy Roundtable discussion, international film festival, music concert, literary evening, an art exhibition and theatre performances are being organised as part of this programme. Musicians from Bangladesh, Nepal, India and Pakistan will perform in the music concert. Gender activists from South Asia, UK, USA and South Africa will take part in the roundtable discussion. All these events will take place between December 3-10, 2007.
